A bride and groom share a tender moment in the desert, surrounded by red rock formations in Arches National Park. The bride wears a white gown and veil.

Utah is a dream destination for adventurous couples looking to say "I do" in the wild. With red rock deserts, alpine lakes, epic canyons, and national parks galore, it’s no surprise that Utah is one of the top elopement spots in the U.S. Whether you’re drawn to Moab, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, or the Bonneville Salt Flats, here’s everything you need to know about planning your Utah elopement.

Why Elope in Utah?

Utah offers a diverse range of landscapes, making it perfect for couples who want dramatic scenery as their ceremony backdrop. The state is also elopement-friendly with relatively simple marriage laws, a wide variety of locations to choose from, and plenty of space to enjoy privacy and solitude.

Best Time of Year to Elope in Utah

  • Spring (March–May): Wildflowers, cooler temps, and fewer crowds.

  • Fall (September–November): Crisp air and golden aspens in higher elevations.

  • Winter: Magical snow-covered backdrops at higher elevations.

  • Summer: Stunning in the alpine regions, but desert areas can be extremely hot, and it's very busy.

Top Elopement Locations in Utah

The best places to get married with seclusion and an incomparable view will come from pros like me who do location scouting for their couples, but here are some of the coolest general areas to get married!

  • Zion National Park: Iconic canyon views with lots of biodiversity and beautiful colors

  • Moab + Arches National Park: Great for couples craving desert vibes, red rocks, and natural arches.

  • Bonneville Salt Flats: Surreal, otherworldly landscapes perfect for unique portraits.

  • Big Cottonwood Canyon: Near Salt Lake City, great alpine vibes.

  • Bryce Canyon: Dreamy hoodoos and high-elevation beauty.

A couple holds hands on a rocky cliff edge in Zion National Park; the woman in a white dress, the man in a suit. Vast canyon landscape under a warm sunset.

Legal Requirements for Eloping in Utah

  • Marriage License: Apply in person at any Utah county clerk’s office.

  • No Waiting Period: You can elope the same day you get your license.

  • Officiant: A licensed officiant must perform the ceremony (I’m ordained and happy to do this!).

  • Witnesses: You’ll need two witnesses present.

Permits + Park Rules

If you're planning to elope in a national park, state park, or federally owned lands, you’ll likely need a Special Use Permit. Each park has its own rules and timelines for approval, so it’s best to start the process early. I help all my couples with permit research and applications!
